Bernard Silvester
† entre 1159 et 1178
Biography
Sometimes confused with Bernard of Chartres, Bernard Silvester taught at Tours and wrote works imbued with Chartrain thought: a commentary on Martianus Capella and two philosophical poems, the Cosmographia, dedicated to Thierry of Chartres, and the Mathematicus. The Cosmographia is a sort of allegorical epic poem in which the major personages are Natura, Noys (divine providence), Urania (sister of Natura) Yle or Silva (unformed matter, inclined to evil) and Tugaton (the Good, namely God).
