† 1154
Biography
Gilbert studied with Bernard of Chartres and Anselm of Laon. He was chancellor of the school of Chartres from 1126 to 1137, but also taught in Paris. He wrote commentaries on the theological treatises of Boethius, on the Psalter, and on the Epistles of Saint Paul. Named bishop of Poitiers in 1142, he was obliged to defend his doctrine of the Trinity at the Council of Reims in 1148. His logical and metaphysical thought is one of the most vigorous in the twelfth century. It survives after the death of Gilbert, transmitted by his many disciples, among whom are Nicholas of Amiens, Simon of Tournai, Alain of Lille and Raoul Ardent.
