Fulbert de Chartres

Fulbert may have studied at Reims under Gerbert of Aurillac, the future Pope Sylvester II. He became a canon, master, chancellor, and then, in 1006, bishop of Chartres, while continuing to teach and write on all subjects. He undertook the reconstruction of the cathedral after the disastrous fire of 1020. His work is marked by the breadth of his humanistic culture. It includes sermons, poems, letters, and a treatise against the Jews. Fulbert had many disciples, among whom are Berengar of Tours, Adalmann of Liège, Hartwic of Saint Emmeran. Abbé Clerval considered him the founder of the school of Chartres.
